CA Blogging Assignment #4

I thought the "enhanced" students described in Radical Evolution was very interesting at fist, but when I thought about it coming to reality, I realized the idea is pretty frightening. The idea of being "enhanced" contradicts my personal opinion of what it means to be human. I believe the essential part of being human is to seek improvement and progress in life for more satisfaction. If we are able to become superhumans by "enhancing" ourselves, soon, we will cease to feel the need for further improvement. For me, not being perfect is the essence of being human, and I think life is all about trying to discover new ways to improve ourselves. Therefore, even though being "enhanced" sounds interesting, I feel there is no need for "enhancement," and I don't think it is even possible.

  1. I agree with your estimation of the value of striving for self-improvement, but I fear the enhancements alluded to in the text are well on their way to reality.

  2. I exactly agree that "the essential part of being human is to seek improvement and progress in life for more satisfaction." I actually wonder why they are enroll to schools since they can access to information they want...

  4. I agree with your idea about human nature since I sometimes wish to improve memory like enhanced students but I always came up the question "is it really my ability?" However, the enhancements technology is not only in science fiction anymore. It is in real now.

  5. I agree with what you guys said about being human. If you stop seeking "improvement and progress in life," you lose the point of living.

  6. I agree too. What is the point of living if you cant feel improvement and progress? :)

  7. I think people would still have a chance to seek "improvement and progress". However, I do agree that the complete "enhancement" seems impossible, or impossible when we are alive. I hope it to be possible! Enhance me!

Good point. If they can access whatever information and self-educate, there would be no reason for them to pay for education. Then, maybe schools will be a place to just make friends?

Exactly what scares you about having the "enhanced" students coming to reality? The fact that humans may become not so human, or are there some other factors?

I guess you're right that "enhancements" are not just fiction anymore. However, it has not yet advanced to the point of my concern. The "enhanced" students that Garreau mentioned are yet to come true, and I wonder if technology should go so far.

Exactly my point. I believe what keeps us going is our dream of having an ideal life, and the small happiness we feel from our everyday accomplishments.
