CA Blogging Assignment#6

Garreau calls the scenario of having three types of humans in the future--"enhanced," "natural" and "the rest"--"The Law of Unintended Consequences." However, the term itself means to me the situation of doing or assuming something and ending up with consequences you have not predicted. For example, when I was in middle school, my parents took me to The Art Institute of Chicago Museum. I did not want to go there at all because I always thought museums were boring. However, once I got there, I met many paintings that I really enjoyed looking at, and I even got a T-shirt of Van Gogh's "Bedroom in Arles" printed on the front at the souvenir shop. I did not think I would enjoy the museum at all; therefore, I believe the satisfaction and some souvenirs I took home with me may be considered as outcomes of "The Law of Unintended Consequences."

  1. I think so too. Sometimes these unintended or unexpected experiences and/or insights can change the direction of our lives.

  2. I agree that some unintended consequences can lead to new experiences and insights. It gives us new perspective. Sometimes, these experiences can be negative. However, I think the most important thing is what you learn from the unpredicted consequences.

  3. In my childhood, I also went to museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, frequently. I enjoyed the museum very much, it was like my playground. I agree that museums give people unexpected and great encounters.

  4. "Unintended consequences" sometimes give us new perspective or new hobbies. As your own example shows, after you got an unintended consequence your world was expanded. Great experience :)

  5. I have similar experiences of yours but mine is not museum, a mountain. I guess many people have those kind of unintended consequences in their lives, especially in their childhood.
